At The Clay Centre, we offer a variety of fun and creative clay classes for children and teenagers. Whether your child is just starting out or wants to advance their skills, our experienced tutors guide them through hands-on projects like wheel throwing and hand-building. Classes are designed to encourage creativity and skill-building, with lots of opportunities for messy play and taking home their handmade pieces. How to book a class

Our classes are released a month before the start of each term. First, we make them available to preview on our booking website along with the release date. This gives you time to decide which class works for you without the pressure of missing out. Then, on the specified date, bookings will open using the same link. Beginners Wheel Throwing and Hand Building for ages 9 - 16 years

Beginners Wheel Throwing and Hand Building for ages 9 - 16 years

Day: Wednesday afternoons
Time: 4:00 - 5:30pm
Duration/ level: 8 weeks / All Levels
Dates: 22nd July - 9th September 2026
No previous experience needed
Description:
During this 8-week Beginners Wheel Throwing and hand Building course, your child will learn how to throw, finish and decorate bowls and cups, and how to create Hand Built pieces that don't involve the pottery wheel. This is a unique opportunity to experience the 2 main methods of making with clay. At the end of the course they will be able to decorate and glaze their work, making it completely food and dishwasher safe - the perfect opportunity to work with their hands and be rewarded by taking home their own handcrafted pots.

Clay is included in the course cost, and tools are available to use during class.
Course also includes up to 6 pieces to keep - additional pieces may be kept for a fee of $15 per piece.

Description:
Your child/ren will get to create their own creature during this 8-week sculpture/hand building class run by Estefany. Your child will use a variety of techniques, with a strong focus on creativity and fun.

Estefany is a passionate art tutor, and a big fan of messy play! She is especially interested in inspiring creativity, and at the same time, teaching clay skills to children, igniting their interest and passion for this incredible medium.

Ages 6 - 9 years.

School holiday programs

School holidays are the perfect time for kids and teens to slow down, get messy and make something with their hands. Our School Holiday Programmes give young makers the chance to spend three creative days in the studio, learning real clay skills while having a lot of fun. Guided by our friendly tutors, they’ll build, sculpt or try the pottery wheel, then decorate and glaze their pieces so they can take home pottery they’re genuinely proud of.

We love our Bees! Let's make them a Bee Hotel to welcome them back into our gardens. Our 3-day clay programme invites tamariki aged 6+ to explore clay using coils to make a bee hotel suitable for the Queen Bee herself!

Across three fun-filled days, kids will design and create their own clay artworks inspired by nature, our gardens and the wonderful important work bees do. Each day encourages creativity, storytelling, and playful experimentation with clay.

Perfect for curious kids who love art, space, and getting their hands messy ✨All materials included. Suitable for ages 6+.

This programme is designed for young makers of all skill levels and focuses on imagination, confidence, and creative expression in a supportive studio environment. By the end of the course, students will have a collection of unique ceramic pieces ready to be glazed and treasured.From sculpting imaginative space creatures to building textured planets and celestial scenes, each day encourages creativity, storytelling, and playful experimentation with clay.
